In a collaboration assignment between the film, performing arts, and costume departments, we worked to design and create music videos. The performers chose a song or performance piece that described their personal experience with being quarantined due to COVID-19. I worked with Terrence Williams to understand his reason for choosing the song Heaven by Todrick Hall. He spoke about how he came out over quarantine due to feeling the pressure of not fitting into a space anymore bc he had changed, yet those around him did not. Right before performing for the designers, he reinterpreted it to not only talk about being gay but rather include all minorities in the message. It was a story that resonated with me as a queer person who at the time was only out in my personal life, but not at home. I also talked with Terrence and Julien, the director, about each of their visions for the video. I then created a mood board and helped Terrence choose costumes from his closet. He starts off in a all dark outfit to represent the fear and grief of hiding in the closet. He then changes into a lighter version with the same silhouette to represent that it is still him and there is still growth to be done, but he is embracing his pride in his identity.
