Dress alteration

This design was created for a school assignment where the goal was to start with a base dress, alter it into a costume, then destress the costume that fits the character prompt given. The prompt for my character was "The time is set in a modern era, so modern style clothing. Solaris is a prince of a modern day kingdom, the next in line to be king. He has a hard exterior, putting up a front that he is someone to be taken seriously. He gives off a very intimidating demeanor, but once you get to know him he’s a very kind and gentle person. He only lets his close friends know that about him however. What causes his fall is when another kingdom attacks his own. They burn down the castle while he and his family are still inside. They barely escape and have to flee while their kingdom is taken over by the opposing kingdom. They no longer have a home, having to find refuge somewhere else." I hemmed the skirt of the dress into a shirt at the first tier of the dress. I then removed the elastic from the one band in the sleeve, leaving the elastic at the elbow. Using the fabric from the skirt, I remade the front of the blouse, changing the neckline to be a deep v, rather than a square with a high neck mesh. I also used the remaining skirt fabric to make the cape. After dying it with a synthetic liquid dye, I draped it into the desired shape, connecting it with a gold chain and a decorative pendant. The neckline was decorated with a ruffle used from the skirt and a gold trim. I added the mesh in the center to hold the deep v in place and give a bit more of coverage, despite it being translucent. For the distressing process, I cut the cape and burned holes into it using a lighter. I then touched up the holes with eyeshadow to make them more realistic. I also shaded the shirt and pants with eyeshadow to imitate soot and dirt. The eyeshadow was easily washed out so it is still a wearable garment outside of this assignment.
